Undergraduate Keyboard Audition Requirements

Prescreening - required of all applicants

  • Two contrasting works selected from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and/or Contemporary/Impressionistic periods, with a minimum playing time of 10 minutes
  • A single movement out of a larger composition is allowed to count as a work
  • Prescreening repertoire and live audition repertoire may differ

Piano Performance Major

  • Baroque - A Prelude and Fugue or complete larger work (Partita, English Suite, French Suite, Toccata) by J.S. Bach.
  • Classical - A complete sonata (all movements) by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert (no exceptions).
  • Romantic - A major solo work (10-15 mins) from the 19th-century (no exceptions).
  • Etude - A virtuosic etude by one of the following composers: Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky or Ligeti (no exceptions).

All other music majors

  • Baroque - Any work by J.S. Bach.
  • Classical - A sonata (or one movement) by Mozart, Clementi, Scarlatti, or the equivalent.
  • Romantic - composition of your choice.
Note: All applicants are expected to play from memory. No exceptions will be made to the requirements listed above. All recorded auditions should include date stamped audio and video and will be submitted online via SlideRoom. Each piece should be announced before it is played.
