Application Guidelines

  • Applications are accepted for the fall term only
  • Applications are accepted for one degree program only
  • Graduate applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA for consideration
  • Applicants must be in-progress toward completing or have earned the appropriate prior music degree(s) from a regionally accredited institution in order to apply for a graduate-level music program.  
  • If you are accepted and decide to attend the Frost School of Music, you will be required to provide a final transcript showing a conferred degree.
  • The MA in Music Industry and the MA in Live Entertainment Management programs do not require prior music degrees.
  • For the MM in Musicology and the MM in Media Scoring and Production programs, a BM is preferred but not required. 
  • For the MS in Music Engineering Technology program, a BS degree in electrical engineering or computer science is preferred but not required.
  • Materials submitted in support of an application cannot be released for other purposes nor returned to the applicant

3 Letters of Recommendation February 1

All programs require 3 letters of recommendation. Letters must be sent directly by the recommender. 

GRE February 1

Domestic Transcripts February  1   
  • A hard-copy transcript from the institution can be mailed to: PO Box 248165, Coral Gables, FL 33124 
  • If the institution uses an electronic transcript service the transcript can be sent to the email: fsom.graddocs@miami.edu.

Attach unofficial transcripts (pdf format only) to your application of all prior institutions attended for application review purposes. Unofficial transcripts uploaded within the application may be used to initiate the review of your application.

If accepted, official transcripts from ALL schools attended, regardless of if a degree was granted or not (even if it was a single class), must be sent directly to the Frost School of Music from the issuing institution in order to be considered official. Transcripts sent by the applicant will not be accepted. 

International Transcripts February  1

Submit the following educational documents to an approved international credentialing evaluation service: 

  • Official original diplomas and certificates in the original language. 
  • Official original transcripts in the original language (names of courses, grades, and hours of instruction) for every year of study. 
  • Course-by-course evaluation with GPA is required.

Documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by professional, certified English translations. Translations supplement but do not replace the official documents.

Passport February  1

Required for all international students. Applicants must submit a copy of their passport before a decision can be made. The name on your passport must match the name with which you apply.

TOEFL/IELTS February  1

Reported directly to the University of Miami by the testing agency.
