The Frost School of Music's woodwind applicants may include piano accompaniment on their prescreen/recorded audition videos. However, it is not required nor will it be included at the live audition

    Applicants to the Master of Music and Artist Diploma

    SOLO WORKS:

    • Mozart: Concerto (Mv I-Exposition, and 2nd movement, opening through the cadenza)
    • Stravinsky: Three Pieces (Mv 1,2 & 3)
    • Contemporary Work written in last 25 years (5 minute minimum)

    EXCERPTS (Clarinet 1 parts only):

    Choose three of the following:
    • Beethoven: Symphony #6 (Mv1, 474-492 & Mv2,68-77)
    • Kodaly: Dances of Galanta (first cadenza)
    • Mendelssohn: Midsummer Nights Dream – (Scherzo, Beg. to G)
    • Rimsky Korsakov: -Capriccio Espagnol (Mv 3)
    • Stravinsky: Firebird (Variation Only)
    • Puccini-Tosca, Act III, Reh 11- Reh 12 (opening solo for Clarinet)

    Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts

    SOLO WORKS:

    • Mozart: Concerto (Mv I-Exposition, and 2nd movement, opening through the cadenza)
    • Stravinsky: Three Pieces (Mv 1, 2 & 3)
    • Brahms: Sonata #1 or #2 (recorded with piano) one movement
    • Contemporary Work written in last 25 years (5 minute minimum)

    • A contemporary solo work demonstrating fluency with extended techniques
    • Three orchestral excerpts from the list below
      • Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3 
      • Debussy: Prélude à l’après midi d’un faune 
      • Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis

    Select one or more pieces/movements of your choice that best demonstrate your level of technique and musicality. Total time to be less than 10 minutes. Do not play with piano accompaniment.

  • Audition

    Select three contrasting solo works and/or etudes that best demonstrate your level of technique and musicality. The following repertoire are examples. Similar works may be substituted:

    • Mozart Concerto
    • Vaughan Williams Concerto
    • Strauss Concerto
    • Ferling Etudes
    • Bozza Etudes
    • Gillet Etudes
    In addition to the above, play the following orchestral excerpts:
    • Tchaikovsky Sym.#4 (2nd mvmt. solo)
    • Rossini Scala (slow solo and fast solo)

    All Masters applicants to Multiple Woodwinds must audition on three instruments.

    For Principal Instrument
    • Flute - Mozart, Concerto in G, K.313
    • Oboe - Mozart, Concerto in C, K.314
    • Clarinet - Mozart, Concerto in A, K.622
    • Bassoon - Mozart, Concerto in B-flat, K.191
    • Saxophone - Glazunov, Concerto for Alto Saxophone
    For all chosen Secondary Instruments
    • A movement from the standard solo repertoire of each instrument that represents the applicant’s level of performance.

    All Doctoral applicants to Multiple Woodwinds must audition on three instruments, one of which must be a double reed.

    For Principal Instrument
