Unless specified, prescreen requirements are the same as listed below. 

Please provide a complete list of previously studied repertoire.

All applicants will be judged on their individual style, musicianship, and technique. All schools of technique are welcome.

Please contact Dr. Carnochan with any questions or requests for substitutions.

Applicants for the Master of Music

  • Audition Requirements

    Live audition or a video recording uploaded to the application portal. The audition must contain 15-20 minutes of selections from the following:

    • Two solo works representing different historical periods and styles. Memorization is preferred but not required.
    • One movement from a concerto, including a cadenza (Handel, Mozart, Ravel, etc.) Memorization is preferred, but not required.
    • Two orchestra excerpts and two cadenzas from the lists below. Memorization is not required.
      • Choose two orchestra excerpts from the list below:
        • Bartok – Concerto for Orchestra, 4th movement, 119 to 127 and 345 to 356
        • Berlioz – Symphonie Fantastique, 2nd movement, opening through the downbeat of six measures before 25 and 32 to 33
        • Strauss – Don Juan, E to six measures before G and 3 after M to N
        • Strauss – Salome “Dance of the Seven Veils,” six after P to seven before S
        • Stravinsky – Symphony in Three Movements, 2nd movement, two before 118 to 120 and 122 to one before 125
        • Verdi – La Forza del Destino, G to H and N to O
        • Wagner – Die Walküre, “Magic Fire Music,” Act III, scene 3 (all)
      • Choose two cadenzas from the list below:
        • Britten – Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, cadenza, all of Variation J, and Fugue from letter I until two measures after J
        • Ravel – Tzigane, 4 to two before 5
        • Rimsky-Korsakov – Capriccio Espagnol, cadenza and from S through 14 after S
        • Tchaikovsky – Nutcracker Waltz of the Flowers, opening arpeggios and cadenza

Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts

  • Audition Requirements

    Live audition or a video recording uploaded to the application portal. The audition must contain a 30 to 45-minute program representing three of the following periods. Memorization is preferred, but not required.

    • Baroque or Classical
    • Romantic
    • Contemporary

Applicants to the Artist Diploma

    • For students holding a Bachelor's degree in performance, the requirements are the same as the Master of Music.
    • For students holding a Master's degree in performance, the requirements are the same as the Doctor of Musical Arts.
