Graduate Admission Requirements

On-Campus Programs

Application Guidelines

  • Applications are accepted for the fall term only
  • Applications are accepted for only one degree program 
  • Graduate applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA for consideration
  • Applicants must be in-progress toward completing or have earned the appropriate prior music degree(s) from a regionally accredited institution in order to apply for a graduate level music program.  If you are accepted and decide to attend the Frost School, you will be required to provide a final transcript showing a conferred degree.
  • The MM in Music Business & Entertainment Industries and the MA in Arts Presenting & Live Entertainment Management do not require prior music degrees.  The MS in Music Engineering Technology is open to students who have completed an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering or computer science.
  • Current University of Miami students applying to a new degree program must provide an official UM transcript 
  • Materials submitted in support of an application cannot be released for other purposes nor returned to the applicant

Supplemental Materials Guidelines

Not all materials are required for all degree programs. Please see the chart above for specific requirements.
  • Prescreening
    • Some programs require a prescreening audition before receiving an on-campus audition invitation. The prescreening must be uploaded to SlideRoom by December 1st. Please visit Audition Requirements for additional information on audition dates and requirements
  • Auditions
    • On-campus auditions are preferred. For scholarship/assistantship consideration you must attend a live audition. If faculty approve a recorded audition, this must be submitted online via SlideRoom. Please visit Audition Requirements for additional information on audition dates and requirements
  • GRE Score
    • GRE scores are only valid for a period of five years. The Frost School of Music Graduate program requires a minimum 295 combined Verbal and Quantitative score and minimum 4.0 on the Analytical Writing. The GRE codes for UM are as follows: Institution Code R5815, Department Code 2404 
  • Interview
    • If your program requires an interview, you will be contacted by department faculty to schedule a date 
  • Portfolio
  • Teaching Sample
    • TOEFL and IELTS scores are only valid for a period of two years. The Frost School of Music requires applicants to receive a minimum TOEFL score of 80 or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. The TOEFL codes for UM are as follows: Institution Code R5815, Department Code 2404
  • Writing Sample

International Applicants

  • TOEFL/IELTS- Test scores are required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not received a degree from an accredited English-speaking institution. Additional information can be found under Application/Program Requirements.
  • Applicants must submit a copy of their passport.
  • All applicants that have attended a college/university in China must have the CDGDC send their official transcript(s), diploma(s), and translations to their chosen evaluation service.
  • If accepted, you will be contacted by the Office of Admission to submit documentation of financial responsibility. 
  • International Transcript Evaluation Guidelines:
    • All applicants with international transcripts must provide a course-by-course transcript and GPA evaluation from Josef Silny & Associates, World Education Services (WES), or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
    • Evaluations and translations must be based on an official transcript and diploma
    • Applicants must provide both the original language and official translated transcript and diploma for evaluation
    • All completed evaluations/translations/CDGDC verifications should be sent to PO Box 248165 Coral Gables, FL 33124

    • Applicants who are applying with a current degree in progress will be required to have their final transcripts and diploma evaluated upon arrival at the Frost School. If applicants use Josef Silney for the initial evaluation, the Frost School will cover the evaluation. If applicants choose a different vendor, they will be responsible for the cost of the re-evaluation.
