Euphonium

Prescreening

Select two or three contrasting etudes or solos (or movements from a concerto or sonata) totaling six minutes which best demonstrate your tone, range, technique, and lyric ability. 

On-Campus Audition

  • Applicants are expected to prepare the following excerpts. Selections will be chosen by the faculty:
    • Sousa: Stars and Stripes - Beginning through the first strain, take the first ending and stop
    • Sullivan: Pineapple Poll - Beginning to eight before Rehearsal 2
    • Grainger: Molly on the Shore - Measures 71 to 99
    • Holst: First Suite in Eb - Beginning to two before Rehearsal A
    • Grainger: Colonial Song - Measure 21 to downbeat of measure 45
    • Grainger: Rufford Park Poachers - Pickups to measure 51 to measure 84
    • Schoenberg: Theme and Variations - Measures 149 to 169
    • Barber: Commando March - Rehearsal B to second bar of Rehearsal C
    • Shostakovich: Festive Overture - Rehearsal 8 to 5 measures after Rehearsal 9; one before Rehearsal 21 to the Ab after the Eb trill
    • Mendelssohn: Fingal's Cave - Beginning to the two tied B natural whole notes
  • Select one of the following:

French Horn

Applicants for all degrees

Choose one unaccompanied solo from the following list

Trombone

Prescreening Requirements

  • Select two contrasting solo works (or movements from a concerto or sonata) which best demonstrate your tone, range, technical, and lyrical ability.
  • Required orchestral excerpts:
    • Tenor Trombone:
      • Mozart: Tuba Mirum from "Requiem"
      • Berlioz: Hungarian March
      • Ravel: Bolero
    • Bass Trombone:
      • Haydn: The Creation
      • Berlioz: Hungarian March
      • Schumann: Symphony No. 3

Applicants for the Master of Music

A live audition is preferred.  The audition should contain 20-30 minutes of selections from the following:

Tenor Trombone:
  • Two contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, in their entirety
  • Required Orchestral Excerpts:
    • Berlioz Hungarian March
    • Mahler Symphony No. 3
    • Mozart Tuba Mirum from Requiem
    • Ravel Bolero
    • Rossini William Tell Overture
    • Saint Saens Symphony No. 3
    • Wagner Ride of the Valkyries
Bass Trombone:
  • Two contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, in their entirety
  • Required Orchestral Excerpts:
    • Berlioz Hungarian March
    • Haydn The Creation
    • Rossini William Tell Overture
    • Schumann Symphony No. 3
    • Wagner Ride of the Valkyries

Applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts

A live audition is required. The audition should be a 30-minute performance of selections from the following:

Tenor or Bass Trombone:
  • In addition to the orchestral excerpts listed above, applicants must perform three contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, one of which must be a Baroque transcription, and one of which must be a Contemporary piece

Applicants for the Artist Diploma

  • For students holding a Bachelors degree in performance: the requirements are the same as the Master of Music
  • For students holding a Masters degree in performance: the requirements are the same as the Doctor of Musical Arts

Note: Prior to the audition, all applicants are encouraged to confirm their audition material with Professor Tim Conner by e-mail.

Trumpet

Prescreening Requirements

  • One Etude of the applicant's choice
  • Choose one of the following: 
    • One movement of a standard solo work (concerto or sonata) or
    • A short solo work (five to eight minutes) or
    • Five to eight minutes from a single movement work or
    • Three standard orchestral excerpts

*Repertoire chosen should demonstrate the applicant's musical and technical ability and interest

On-Campus Auditions

  • Two contrasting etudes
  •  A complete concerto or sonata from the standard repertoire
  • An additional solo of the applicant's choice
  • Three to five orchestral excerpts
